Bangkok, Thailand — Ask almost any vegan traveller about Northeastern Thai food and you’ll hear the same thing: it’s nearly impossible to eat plant-based. Isaan (also spelled Isan) cuisine is built on fish sauce, fermented fish, and grilled meats. At Tammang, a 100% plant-based restaurant in Bangkok, all of it is recreated without a single animal product — and the result has made Tammang the first and only fully vegan restaurant in Thailand to be recognized in the MICHELIN Guide.

Listed as MICHELIN Selected in the 2026 MICHELIN Guide Thailand and rated as a budget-friendly eatery, Tammang has become a destination for travellers, food lovers, and the global plant-based community alike — proof that you don’t have to choose between authentic Thai flavour and eating vegan.

What Makes Tammang Different

Most vegan restaurants adapt dishes to be plant-friendly. Tammang does the opposite: it reverse-engineers the most meat-heavy, fish-sauce-dependent cuisine in Thailand and rebuilds it from plants, flavor for flavor.

The restaurant makes its own vegan *pla ra* (fermented “fish”) from soybeans, and its own vegan fish sauce — fermented for two to three months from fermented soybeans, kombu seaweed, roasted sticky rice, and mushrooms — to deliver the deep umami (“nua”) that defines Isaan cooking. The MICHELIN Guide itself notes that Tammang retains the richness of the original by replacing fish sauce with fermented soybeans. Its dishes, from vegan grilled pork nam-tok to authentic Isaan-style grilled plates, are made by hand and clean-label, without the additives common in mass-market substitutes.

Even the name tells the story: “Tam” is the sound of the mortar and pestle that powers Isaan kitchens; “Mang” is short for *mangsawirat* (vegetarian).

Recognized at Home and Abroad

Tammang’s reputation now reaches well beyond Bangkok. On 14 May 2026, drawn by Tammang’s plant-based meat innovation, the Good Food Institute (GFI), a leading international nonprofit working on the future of food and alternative proteins, joined a workshop hosted by Tammang called “The Future of Isaan Soul” — to study and exchange knowledge toward developing the future of meat-free cuisine. Tammang has also appeared on numerous Thai television programs, and was recently invited into the house of True Academy Fantasia (TrueAF2026) — one of Thailand’s best-known 24-hour reality singing competitions — to serve its plant-based Isaan food to the contestants. It marked the first time vegetarian and vegan food had featured on a reality show followed by Thailand’s younger generation, a sign that plant-based eating is reaching a wider audience and gaining broader acceptance. Tammang was also the only vegan restaurant selected to receive the “Delicious & Well-Connected” mark from True5G Signal of Deliciousness, a collaboration between True Corporation and the Tourism Authority of Thailand promoting Thai food as soft power — where its dishes drew crowds of curious diners, many unable to tell the food was vegan.

“Real Isaan food is supposed to be loud, spicy, and a little wild,” said Kittichoke Veratecha, Founder and Managing Director of Tammang. “Our whole goal is that you can’t tell what’s missing — there’s just the food you love, made entirely from plants. When a meat-eater finishes a plate and only then remembers it was vegan, that’s the moment we live for.”

Affordable, Everyday, and Open to All

Despite its MICHELIN recognition, Tammang is firmly an everyday eatery. Dishes start at just 65 baht, and the restaurant is built around a simple belief: whatever your eating lifestyle, everyone can enjoy Tammang together — vegan and non-vegan alike, sharing the same table and the same meal.

One of its best-loved dishes, vegan grilled pork nam tok, dates back to Tammang’s earliest days selling at Siam Paragon, where it once drew long queues — freshly grilled and tossed in a spicy larb dressing, authentic Isaan in both look and taste.
